The Downtown District is a self-taxing Special Services District in New Britain. It was formed by downtown property owners with the goal to promote and revitalize, and to attract new businesses to the city's central business district. Projects have included a statewide billboard campaign inviting businesses and investors to the city, brokerage open houses, and architectural walking tours.
Also, the Downtown District is involved in a variety of city improvement projects, including a massive infrastructure rebuilding as well as leasing space. The executive director's primary mission is to assist property owners in leasing space or to assist prospective property owners who are investing in the downtown. The Downtown District in its entirety is located within the Enterprise Zone, which makes a wide range of benefits available to eligible businesses.
In recent years, the New Britain Common Council adopted a resolution which offers a 50% tax break to all existing New Britain restaurant owners who open a second operation in the New Britain Downtown District.
